Porcupine Mountains, MI

Beautiful scenery! Not a great place for biking. The shoulders on the road are narrow to non-existent. There are a few specific bike trails, but they are very short. If you go, a must stay at the Union River Big Bear Campground. It is family owned currently in its second generation. It is located just across the road from Lake Superior. Some of the nicest people you will ever meet. And their campground is beautiful. In the evening, they light a campfire for all campers to enjoy as the sunsets over the lake. The night I was there, the sunset did not have extraordinary color. A forest fire in Canada was casting a haze over the evening sun. I did enjoy the dozens of hummingbirds that came to the feeder. I learned about the “Yooper Rock.” I have lived in Michigan all my life and had never heard of such. See the photo below to see if you have ever found one on the shores of Lake Superior.

This is the bike riding lane along the roads in Porcupine Mountain State Park.
Porcupine View
A view from above – wonder where the hikers are going?
A view of one of the observation decks located in the mountains.
The lookout tower. Afraid of heights – yes I am. But I took a deep breath and climbed to the top. Only to find nothing picture worthy. All one can see is the tops of trees. Oh, well. So I took a picture of the stairs.
One of the waterfalls in Porcupine Mountains. Actually located at a roadside park.
The evening sunset from the campfire. Still beautiful.
A blurry picture of my campsite at Union River. Taken with my new phone that has a very slow shutter speed. Gives you the idea of your own little world at the well maintained campground.
The hummingbirds at sunset

Finally, the picture you have been waiting for . . . The YOOPER ROCK

During the day, it looks like an ordinary stone. It can only be found at night with a black light on the shores of Lake Superior.

If you decide to go and want to stay at Union River Big Bear Campground, and you come to the end of the earth, you have gone to far.
